The Market
The high rate of unemployment and the long isolation of the villagers made it necessary to find alternative ways that can create almost an immediate economical growth in the village.
We have decided to develop an economical structure in which agriculture, tourism, aesthetics and local hospitality culture are combined and are forming a strong base for economical independency and sustainability in village.
The market is located in the forest, and consists of 40 plots -one per each family. The different families can sell home made (locally produced) products such as olive oil, honey, medical herbs, cheeses etc.
The market is attached to a parking lot that can be transformed into an expanded market square on special occasions (holidays and/or other festivities etc).
We have invited Debra Solomon to help us setting up the first market: www.culiblog.org/2008/05/a-fast-food-market/
“To Market, the Market”
Together with the women of Ein Hawd, Solomon is developing a market that aims to represent the story of the food in the village. This market triggers a process of awareness for both the village food producers and the visitors to the market that buy her local products.
The market is a representational machine in which the space of food and culture is connected with the ecology of Ein Hawd as a location, an expression of the cultural identity of the village. Aside from the sustainable development aspect, developing a market filled with local produce is a cultural act. a market filled with local produce is a cultural act.
