The School

Lacking a formal school, the villagers built their own: a small concrete cabin, just 20m2, in the centre of the village. Ein Hawd’s children have been taught in this improvised school from the 1970s up until the present day. Now, following recognition, the school has acquired two more cabins, which have been constructed by the government. One is used as a second classroom, the other as a kindergarten. Even with these additions, the new school is still too small. Therefore, the new masterplan suggests moving the school and kindergarten to the upper part of the village, to face the park. In that location, it will benefit from more space and views, and it can also be used by villagers as a community centre.

Dan Graham video installation in the School: “Waterloo Sunset Pavilion”

A key location of Ein Hawd social space is the quite basic structure of the elementary school. Its simple architectural elements don’t offer much to fuel the children’s imagination. The project of Dan Graham for the Award Gallery will present the re-definition of the space of people, expression how we can create social spaces for children also a context of complexity.
